Traveling Inward

Christina Iorga

Cristina Iorga has earned an MFA in Printmaking from University of Iowa and a BFA in Drawing and Printmaking from the National University of Arts in Bucharest, Romania.

Cristina Iorga's art is a burst of the subconscious. In her conception, art is concerned with the expression of both the spiritual and the material. Iorga thinks that the expression of pure feeling puts the viewer in touch with an alternative, ultimately spiritual world.

Artist Statement

My name is Cristina Iorga. I have a Master of Fine Arts degree in Printmaking, as well as a Master of Arts degree in Printmaking from University of Iowa. I graduated from University of Iowa in 2009 Magna Cum Laude. During my training at the University of Iowa I was awarded the Iowa Arts Fellowship for two years in a row. I feel very privileged to have received the Iowa Arts Fellowship for two years in a row because University of Iowa was ranked as the number one printmaking program in the United States at the time. The legacy of Mauricio Lasansky has powerfully imprinted my study years at University of Iowa. Although I have been doing Art since I ever remember myself existing; my "official" artistic training started at the age of twelve when my parents enrolled me in one of the most prestigious art schools in Romania, “Nicolae Tonitza.” Later on I received my BFA in Fine Art from The University of Fine Arts in Bucharest Romania.

Throughout my entire Art Studies, I was trained in printmaking, painting, illustration, drawing, watercolor and sculpture.

Both in Romania and the USA I had the chance to study under the direction of some of the greatest contemporary artists. Teachers like Nistor Coita, Aurel Alexi, Virginia Myers Anita Jung and Robert Glasgow guided me and helped me achieve my potential at every stage of my development as an artist. Over the years I have experimented with many art techniques. Drawing has always been an extremely important subject for me. I have accumulated a lot of expertise over the years by drawing live models and making copies of the work of the great masters. My intention has always been to achieve a high degree of technical excellence and a level of expression that would help me move with ease on the work surface. I also created illustrations for two books that were later published in Romania.
